United States FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force today arrested David Coleman Headley, an American national at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Toying on Lashkar-e-Toiba’s schemes to bomb India and Denmark as part of its terrorist attacks, Headley was about to board a flight to Philadelphia from where he was supposed to meet the fugitive Ilyas Kashmiri. Headley’s partner Pakistani-Canadian national Tahawwur Hussain Rana was already arrested by FBI on October 18. Headley’s original namewas Daood Gilani which he chaged in the year 2006.
According to FBI’s chargesheet submitted at a Chicago court, Headley was in close contact with top LeT leaders, identified by the sleuths as “LeT member A” and “Individual A”. The emails exchanged between Headley and Let member A “reflect that LeT Member A was placing a higher priority on using Headley to assist in planning a new attack in India than on completing the planned attack in Denmark.” FBI emphasized the fact that this LeT member A “has substantial influence and responsibility within the organization” and his “identity is known to the government.”
The terrorists have been infuriated by a Danish Newspaper that allegedly published cartoons of Prophet Mohammed.
US investigatives had, for quite some time, suspected Al Qaeda and LeT to have been using unsuspecting western nationals as part of their terror schemes. And it took quite a while to share and exchange such investigative information “with our foreign partners as we worked together to mitigate these threats,” David Kris, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, further added, “this case is a reminder that the threat posed by international terrorist organizations is global in nature and requires constant vigilance at home and abroad.”
“Postings to an internet group for graduates of a military school in the Pakistani town of Hasan Abdal (a group that refers to itself as “abdalians”, reflect that both Rana and Headley have participated in the group and referred to their attendance at that school,” the FBI said after it submitted some past information about the two arrested nationals. Headley and Rana had discussed the activities of the other individuals, past terrorist acts and also further terror activities. According to the FBI affidavit, Headley at times has claimed to be a consultant with or representative of Rana’s business, First World Immigration Services but had not much interest in business. He also, allegedly, travelled to Pakistan and s\certain parts to Europe frequently since last year.
