“Mathura Train Collision Tragic”

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

The birth place of Lord Krishna turned into a nightmare world for unfortunate travellers of the  Goa Express after the train collided with the stationary Mewar Express at the Mathura city in Uttar Pradesh, around 55km from Agra, killing 23 passangers on spot and injuring 20 others. Several were trapped in the two rear-end crushed bogies. “The condition of some of those injured is critical and unstable,” confirmed Rajesh Kumar, senior divisional commercial manager, involved in rescue work on the accident site.

Trying to dispel fears of death figures rising, PR officer Bhupendra Dhillon to DRM assured the media that rescue work “is progressing at a fast pace and the situation should normalise within a few hours.”

Despite repeated assurances, reports continued to flood in of delayed response from the involved authorities. Saurabh Jain, one of the passengers, retorted: “We could feel electric shocks coming from compartments at the rear of the train. But the authorities reacted very late.”
