This decision has been taken to tame the “Unmanageable” state of Uttar Pradesh. “I have written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to give us clearance for creating independent states of Budelkhand and Harit Pradesh out of a giant-sized and unmanageable Uttar Pradesh.”

Talking about the move, Mayawati told at a press conference that she was always in favour of smaller states as they are more organized and manageable. “Since the centre has already given its nod for carving out the state of Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh, there was good enough reason to follow the same exercise in case of UP, where the demand for an independent Bundelkhand in southern UP and a Harit Pradesh in western UP was being raised for a long time,” she said.

She emphasized that “these views have been expressed by me on several occasions in the past as well.” Addind a triumphant note to the discussion, Mayawati said, “In the past too, on March 15, 2008, I had sent a letter to the prime minister, urging him to consider the demand of the people of Bundelkhand and of western UP for giving them independent statehood.” She argued further, “Still earlier on October 8, 2007, I had expressed these view at a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) rally in Lucknow.”

She has urged agitated protestors “not to indulge in any activity that is likely to disturb law and order in the state.” and has assured to “extend full support to the popular demand of the people”.

On Sunday evening at Karnawala village in Bijnor district, about 400 km from Lucknow, four villagers charged into the woman’s residence while she was alone and demanded the land from her. They beat her and stripped her after she refused to give in to their demand.

The woman suffered miscarriage and has been hospitalised.

Once again the Mayawati Government is put under the scanner as the ban that was imposed by a collegium constituting  Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Justice S.H. Kapadia and Justice Aftab Alam till Oct 26, has been disobeyed by  the UP government who have continued constructing buildings and memorials at the Noida park that includes those of  Dalit leader Kanshi Ram and Mayawati herself.

The conflict with the Apex Court came into the nation’s attention when following a plea from Central Empowered Committee to stop the UP government from cutting down 6000 trees, the Court ordered an immediate ban which, however, the Mayawati government gleefully violated.

Earlier too, Justice B N Agrawal and Justice Aftab Alam rebuffed the  government, saying: “Don’t behave this way as you behaved with a position in the assembly. Don’t treat this court as your political adversary as (though) you have some points to score.” Government counsels Satish Chandra Mishra and Harish Salve were informed  that the state government was behaving irresponsibly towards the final law holder of the State.

The Mayawati govt. has levied Rs. 5 on one quarter of a liquor bottle, Rs. 10 for half the bottle and 15 for a full. For beer, the charge is less, one bottle being Rs. 5 only. This makes a Rs. 41 deshi liquor bottle purchased by the public at Rs. 55. Although, this may seem a petty amount but of we consider the annual extortion fee, then for foreign liquor or deshi one, the govt. collects an annual Rs 90 crores whereas on the annual selling of  beer, charges levied reach Rs. 30 crores.  Ths shop-owners informed that this is visible in “each and every shop.”

When asked,  Amar Singh of Samajwadi Party confessed that he too was approached to be a part of it, but he “refused to succumb to their pressure.” he also mentioned a “gentleman”, who is a close relative to powerful Punjab politicians and is the main negotiator between the liquor lobby and  Shashank Sekhar Singh, the all-powerful Cabinet Secretary in Mayawati’s raj. BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy condemned the extortion and described it as “shocking” and “unbelievable”

This comes just hours after the apex court of the country slams the UP government over its deliberate political tactics over the construction of memorials at Lucknow.

“What distinguishes democracy from majoritarian rule is the constitution,” Reportedly, the UP government carried out construction at various memorial sites after Sep 8 when the apex court demanded an immediate stay-order on the on-going work.
